An early Xmas present for me (from me)

There is this fantastic carpenter who lives near me and I got him to make this wonderful frame 3' X 1' for one of the shots I liked most this year. I wanted it as rustic as the picture and I think the effect is beautiful and wanted to share it, see more of his stuff here
I know I have been quiet of late, sorry, been busy and the weather is lousy

The Chieftan, Boyle Co Roscommon

Sitting on a hill on the side of the road overlooking the road from Sligo to Dublin stands this impressive sculpture. It commemorates a  battle in 1599 when an English force was ambushed by Irish Rebels.
Behind it is a little picnic area overlooking Lough Key

Contest photo

I am a regular visitor of The retired one as she takes fantastic pictures and every month she has a themed contest which I always check out, as there are always some fantastic pictures there too. Her own pictures vary from landscapes to macro and from animals to insects and her observations are always humourous, so check her out by clicking on her name above or click here.
Anyway its third time lucky as my third entry won the August contest, the theme was Lakes, Ponds, Rivers or Creeks. My prize is I get the bragging rights and a widget, but most of all it made me smile on a bad day!
Here is my winning picture taken in Connemara, I was surprised to win as there were other great pictures click here.

Hill of Slane, Co Meath

These ruins sit on top of the hill overlooking the village of Slane. This site is said to be where St. Patrick lit the Paschal(Easter) fire in defiance of High King Laoire. King Laoire had fobade the lighting of fires while the festival fire was burning on the hill of Tara, the fire St Patrick lit could have been seen even though it was 17km (10miles away). King Laoire in spite of the defiance let Patrick continue his missionary work in Ireland. On the site there are the ruins of the friary and and the college.
But this site was historically significant before St PAtrick lit the fire, on the right side (which I did not get to visit this time) stands a Motte and Bailey from the Norman times which is said to have been built on the site where the Fil Bolg Slaine Mac Dela. See more on Fir Bolg click here.
