King Johns Castle Athenry, Co Galway

This Castle is built beside a little river that was a ford between 3 kingdoms, which is how the town got its name, Athenry is one of the few remaining walled towns in Ireland that still has the existing walls running around the town complete with towers. The castle was built by Meiller De Bermingham and was built around 1250. I am embarrassed to say I do not know more and will have to find out more as I pass this every day.

Very nice. I love the color of the sky in this one ... that endlessly deep blue that you see in the sky sometimes. Lovely building.

Does anyone live in it???

No one lives in it, its open to the public during the summer and I think at limited times thro' the year, I pass this a lot and since we moved offices to Athenry I pass by a number of times in the day, but am loathe to admit I have never been inside :O

*fights to control urge to buy plain tickets to Ireland*

Love the colours here as well, absolutely - and the little drawbridge? over what looks like a moat? It gives a nice balance to the photo.

the little wall that is visible in the post is just landscaping in the park, but if you opened the pic there is a footbridge over a stream the town was a walled town nad had no Moate.
How do you travel with "Plain" tickets, sort of basic travelling?
hehe

Uhm, well, eh - plain tickets are... the new kind of environmentally friendly plane tickets! Right! ;P

(Curse the stupid English spelling system that has so many different ways of spelling similar sounds!!)

Don't worry - a little (friendly) teasing about the mistakes I make in a foreign language goes a long way towards helping me remember the mistake and avoid repeating it :)

Like when I asked my American friend if he had bought the (Irish-language fairy tale) book about the girl and the three /beers/ o_O I'll not be making that mistake again!
